people piss me off
my neighbor's little dog is outside in the heat with no water. who knows how long she had been out there. i took her a bucked of cold water, and while she would not touch it as long as i was there as soon as i backed off she practically swam in it. (like most of the mid-west we have an extreme heat advisory). if they have not taken her inside in half an hour or so i am going to bring her into my house. it's ridiculous to expect the poor girl to be out in this.

i doubt it this is my neighbor's doing. she does not appear to be home, but her son's truck is there. i suspect that he is over there for whatever reason and just doesn't want to mess with the dog. i am going to talk to the neighbor when she gets home. i have a feeling she will be just as pissed about this as i am.

Dog food question
Hello all,

Ever since he was adopted, we have fed our pup Cooper only natural food (our prior 2 dogs died of digestive-related tumors/cancers so we've been extra cautious). However we recently received a 20lb bag of Pedigree free with a coupon, so I thought we'd just see if he'd eat it. Well for the last 24 hours he's been acting like he's on uppers. Has anyone else noticed this kind of effect? I'm pretty sure it correlates to the sugar/carb percentage difference in the normal foods he gets and this new bag. I'm pretty sure that I'll be going immediately back to our regular stuff because for a dog under 2 this added energy is just insane! Thoughts?

Oh, and here's a recent pic just to give you an idea of what he looks like in case you forgot :)

Please help me win $5000 for my local Humane Society!
Feel free to delete if this is not allowed.

I LOVE My dog, and he's a top-10 finalist in a dog-food contest. If he's selected the winner, we get dog food for life, $5000 for our animal charity of choice (the humane society we adopted him from) and a few other perks for me/us. If you have a moment, I'd appreciate your vote and comment! We're only a handful of votes behind, and the contest ends September 22, so I'm trying to push now! http://www.brickfish.com/Pages/PhotosAlbums/PhotoView.aspx?qsi=19512752 THANK YOU!!!

or click the link below. PLEASE if you have a moment, leave a comment. That's where we're most lacking.

We're also trying to figure out his breed mix. The more people that comment, the more likely that we'll win a DNA test kit. Not imperative, and wont change our opinion of our baby, but it would be fun!

FINALLY

We finally figured it out! The snuggly warm dog hat and scarf is finally here! After some long, hard, tedious work, we finally got them past production! We made them in 3 sizes, XS, SM, M/L. We're also almost done with the slotted hats for the ears to poke out of. I'll post images of those when they're finally ready as well!

Thanks everyone for all the feedback and suggestions! You flippin' ROCK!

Meet CHERRIE, the laughing shih Tzu
This past Christmas I got a liver (chocolate) Shih Tzu, Cherrie. Though no one at work believes me I swear that sometimes she laughs! (She gets this big smile and opens her mouth while wagging, So I call that her laugh.)

I named her Cherrie cause Chocolate covered Cherries are my fav candy. She had her baby coat shaved in June, so she looks shabby But here are some pictures of her:

So last night I was going through last winter's bag of ideas for winter dog hats and I found this funny red corduroy one which Stewie just loves to wear. I always laugh so hard when he wears this one but it poses a good question for this season's line of winter-wear....

QUESTION:
What is in more of demand by the customer???
a) Dog hats with cute lil teddy ears on the side or
b) Dog hats with lil slits for the pet's real ears to poke out of?

Help me out here... Let's put it to a VOTE!

To any members in TX
I'm helping a friend get in touch with dog people throughout TX to participate in an event in September in Bryan-College Station, TX.  Do we have any other members in TX who might be interested?  This event is going to be huge.  They have rented the biggest park in the area and will have 100s of booths, an AKC match, demonstrations by performance event groups, a moonwalk, food....I cannot even remember everything she's mentioned.

The website for the event is http://www.brazosvalleykennelclub.info/RDO-Day.html

X-posted to other dog groups on my F-list.

Dog Whispering Behind the Scenes by Rodrigo Trigosso - ArticleCity.com
Dog Whispering Behind the Scenes
 by: Rodrigo Trigosso
Ethology is the science that studies behaviors of a species under natural situations. Therefore, it studies instinctive and non-instinctive behaviors that are typical of a species.

Dog whispering is a training technique based on canine ethology. So, it takes into account those behaviors that are natural in dogs, but usually ignore the principles of learning theories.

The fundamental premise of dog whispering is that the owner should become the leader of the pack. This is also known as the theory or paradigm of the alpha dog.

According to the alpha dog paradigm, dogs establish dominance hierarchies in the pack. Thus, you should achieve the higher hierarchy, the alpha dog status, in order to maintain a good relationship with your dog.

Though it is not clear when the paradigm of the alpha dog appeared, it is well known that it gained popularity in the eighties.

Jan Fennell and Cesar Millan are two of the most famous practitioners of dog whispering. The latter is perhaps the most famed trainer at these days, because of his show "The Dog Whisperer" broadcasted by National Geographic.

Some authors say that dog whispering is based on scientific studies of wolf packs. Others say the technique was developed after studying the social behavior of dogs for several years.

Unfortunately, there are several non-standardized variants of this technique. Besides, some of the technique variants seem to be based only on popular beliefs and not on real studies about dog behavior.

Dog whispering by itself is useless to teach obedience commands. For that reason, many trainers don't accept it as real training technique. Moreover, it is also frequent that practitioners of this technique don't consider themselves as dog trainers. Instead, they claim they are people who can communicate with dogs by a deep understanding of dog behavior and proper body language.

Dog whispering advocates claim that the technique provides a natural way to communicate with dogs. Some of these people also tend to use non-violent procedures. However, the degree of violence is highly variable and depends on the method used by the trainer.

Detractors claim that there is a lack of solid arguments in this technique. They also claim that dog whispering is based on popular beliefs, which could be true for several of its variants.

Same detractors usually question the alpha dog paradigm and argue that there's no need for a model based on dominance hierarchies.

Biologists Raymond and Lorna Coppinger are among the few people who carried out extensive scientific studies on social behavior and evolution of dogs. Their studies reject the paradigm of the alpha dog, and these scientists say that wolves and dogs have very different behavior repertoires. Therefore, studies on the behavior of wolves shouldn't be useful for a better understanding of dog's behavior.

Perhaps further studies on canine ethology could lead to a better understanding of dog behavior. Meanwhile, most dog whispering variants can't provide clear and precise guidelines for dog training; even when there are some really successful "dog whisperers" like Cesar Millan and Jan Fennell.
